Reading, Berkshire, England.
Following one hour's free consultation, I charge an hourly rate of £12.00 for all research services I undertake for my customers plus expenses, which includes the purchase of any certificates, documents, photocopying and postage costs. I will require a deposit of £12.00 before I commence any work. Details of all these expenses can be found at the bottom of this page. A great deal of how much the research will cost will depend upon a number of factors; the nature of your request, the depth and scale of the research you wish to be carried out and, of course and perhaps most importantly for you, the limit of your budget and how much you wish to spend. There are many areas and avenues of research that I will explore to help with enquiries and further details of these resources and the types of research I can carry out can be found on the tab marked "Research". It may be that you require just a simple and straightforward "look-up" on a census return or an entry in a parish record or you may want your entire family history researched, all of which I can endeavour to do.
My undertaking to you:
As soon as I receive your deposit of £12.00 I will proceed with your enquiry immediately. My fee includes preliminary work which will be carried out at home by me to familiarise myself with the research ahead, especially prior to visiting the local record office or library which will save me time and give you the most from your money. This time will also include gathering relevant family history information from you that you may already know or be aware of.
I will keep you informed of progress at all stages.
I will not purchase any certificates or documents or go beyond the hours you have commissioned me for, without your prior approval.
No information will be provided to you without genealogical evidence to support it, therefore accuracy on my part is paramount.
I shall endeavour to provide a speedy response to your enquiry, subject to such constraints as local record offices or libraries being closed on bank holidays, weekends or for such purposes as stock-taking and also allowing time for certificates and documents to be dispatched from registry offices or similar establishments.
After completion of the research undertaken you will receive by post and/or email (whichever you prefer) a detailed report with any accompanying certificates and documents purchased.
You will receive a professional, efficient and courteous service from me at all times.
Your undertaking to me:
To provide for me any known information you may already have e.g. data from any GRO certificates or documents within your possession or knowledge of the family or person you are wanting to be researched. This will enable me to more accurately provide you with answers and to build your tree and will avoid duplicating any information you may already have.
Prompt payment on completion of research - either by cash or cheque. An option to pay by Paypal will be available soon.
There is always the possibility of course that some research will prove inconclusive or indeed no documentation found at all. This will not necessarily be because I am not able to find it, but because it may not exist. Some events may be outside my control; one example is that a name or family on a particular census return or entry in a parish record may be unreadable, has perished or simply was not recorded at the time. Prior to any research work being carried out, I will agree with you a number of hours or a set price at which point I will stop if I have not been able to discover any information of note and contact you to find out if you wish me to proceed.
These are the costs that will be charged in addition to the actual research undertaken and are broken down as follows:
Purchase of GRO certificates (birth, marriage and death) £9.25 each which includes p & p
Purchase of miscellaneous documents: £3.00 and upwards
(i.e. Wills, material from the National Archives etc.)
Photocopying costs at Berkshire Record Office: £1.00
(per sheet, whether A4 or A3)
Self-service Photography at Berkshire Record Office: £1.00
(per image, note a document may require several images
to achieve a complete copy)
Postage costs: Standard Royal Mail costs apply
By cheque (from within the UK only) made payable to N Stepney (please email me for further details) or cash. Charges for any expenses incurred in addition to the research hours undertaken will be invoiced to you separately.
